January 30 is officially the first day to file to run for office in the City of Rockwall General Election which will be held May 11, 2013. The Mayor and City Council Places 1, 3 and 5 will be on the ballot, each for two-year terms. Also on the ballot will be Place 2, which will fill an unexpired, one-year term. The last day for candidates to file for a place on the ballot is March 1 at 5 p.m.
Mayor David Sweet is eligible to run for an additional two-year term in office as mayor. In addition, Council Members David White (Place 1), Bennie Daniels (Place 3) and Michelle Smith (Place 5) are also all eligible to run for an additional two-year term according to the city’s charter. Jim Pruitt has been serving in Place 2 since the city council appointed him, by charter, to fill Mark Russo’s position after he was elected Justice of the Peace. Place 2 will be on the ballot to fill this one-year, unexpired term, and Mr. Pruitt is eligible to run in this position if he so choses.
Informational candidate packets will be available from the City Secretary’s office beginning the week of January 21. Paperwork must be filed with the City Secretary on the third floor of Rockwall City Hall at 385 South Goliad Street. Early voting will be held April 29 thru May 7 at the Rockwall County Elections office on the downtown, historic square at 107 E. Kaufman. Election day voting is May 11 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Utley Middle School cafeteria.
Applications for ballots by mail must be requested from and mailed to the Rockwall County Elections Administrators Office, Attn: Glenda Denton, 107 East Kaufman, Rockwall TX 75087. Applications must be received no later than the close of business on April 26.
