City of Rockwall Pres Release June 2oth 2011
A new lease agreement between the City of Rockwall and new owners of The Shores Golf Course, the Shores Country Club, LLC will allow the golf course to reopen when major renovations are completed.
It is estimated that the renovation work will take four to five months to complete. The owners are anticipating a fall 2011 opening date.
A symbolic ground breaking event was held at the Shores facility the week of June 6 to kick off the start of the renovations.
Portions of the golf course – primarily the back nine holes – are on land owned by the City of Dallas, who leases the land to the City of Rockwall for use as a golf course. The City of Rockwall in turn leases the area to the owner of the rest of the golf course. The balance of the course, the club house and other amenities are on private land owned by the owner/operator of The Shores Country Club.
The new owners bring vast experience in management, maintenance and ownership of high quality golf courses, and they have agreed to initially invest more than $1.3 million in renovations including replacing all of the greens on the course, said Rockwall City Manager Julie Couch.
“We are thrilled that The Shores Golf Course will be open once again and in much better condition than it has been in the past. The City looks forward to working with the Shores Country Club group as they bring the course back,” said Ms. Couch.
City council members have worked for restoration of the Shores Golf Course for the past several years amid continual operational and maintenance issues with its previous owner, which resulted in the city’s cancellation of its lease and foreclosure by the lender followed by the owner’s bankruptcy.
The previous owner closed the golf course in the fall of 2010. Ms. Couch said at the time that it was the city’s goal to have a professional, well operated and functional golf course at The Shores. “It is exciting to see it now happening”, she stated.
